February 2021 was a good month. I had a lot of fun participating and following the Black Girl Booksta Tour! I also hit some milestones during Black History Month! 🥳 I celebrated a birthday and had a great time interacting with most of you! I’ve read 10 titles over the past 28 days; and I have officially reached my 2021 reading goal of 21 meaningful titles. As of today, I have read 23 titles. 😊 A friend made a bet, in the beginning of the year, that I would reach my goal before Purim... and here we are! So lookout for some rereads and a lot more cosplaying since I have so much more free time without the pressure of an overwhelming reading goal. As I contemplate my next creative concept, I figured I would share my line up from the month:
⠀

⠀
✔️Lady Sings the Blues (Book)… read
✔️Lady Sings the Blues (Movie)… watched
✔️The United States Vs. Billie Holiday (Movie)… watched
⠀
Here are my thoughts on the latter:
I can appreciate the artistry of the film, United States Vs. Billie Holiday, and the vision. It’s also a beautiful thing to see an artist venture into newish territory within a leading role. Andra Day did her thing. The movie delivers a perspective worthy of a head nod. It was powerful and delivered an emotional punch sure to give chills and tears. United States Vs. Billie Holiday captured the beauty and mostly haunting aspects of Billie Holiday’s life, but not so much her signature “Lady Day” essence. ***SPOILER ALERT*** If you go in thinking it would be about her life story, you’re in for a rude awakening. About a quarter of the way, I realized that this is a movie with Billie Holiday, but it is a call to the consciousness of America *cough* hence the title *cough*. *Sigh* Every conversation and every scene was very intentional, with three topics drilling it home. Now, I’m not a habitual fact-checker, but even I noticed that this is not entirely factual. And that’s okay if you recognize that Its ART. You are being sold a vision based on reality. Just remember that this is not the full story and this is not Lady Day’s only story. There was some memorable dialogue that will live with me forever. United States Vs. Billie Holiday will definitely leave you curious to find other accounts of her life to compare notes and get the total scoop. I’m already curating my “further reading” list, but if you have more suggestions, feel free to chime in below.

Bookish Thoughts 📚 Lady Sings the Blues by Bill Bookish Thoughts
📚 Lady Sings the Blues by Billie Holiday and William Dufty
⠀
Fiction. Could. Never. Compete. With. Real. Life. (PERIOD)
⠀
Whew. You will walk away disgusted with the world, the government, and the people who loved her music but hated her skin color and especially the ones who failed her as a child. The amount of trauma she faced will make you compassionate to her drowning the pain in drugs over time and then sick all over again for the persecution she got as a result of that. The title fits. Lady Day was a civil rights leader from a hard knock life.
⠀
Please note the following trigger warnings: abuse, molestation, sexualization of a minor, prostitution, drug use, racism, and sexism to name a few. In spite of all I mentioned above I would still read this over and over again. Billie Holiday was the type of woman that as Robert Jones, Jr. put it, can “smoke and talk ish at the same time”. She was glamorous and gritty. As a result, the way she tells her story is raw, very frank, and she is nobody’s victim. What I love the most is Lady Day’s commentary on America’s response to addicts and the judicial system. I immediately followed this reading with watching the 1970s adapted film of the same name. The movie is abridged, compared to the book, and focuses only on the singing aspect of her life story more than who she was as a person. I encourage you to read the book and watch the movie because it allows you to dive deeper into concepts perhaps your imagination didn’t really grasp in text. Also, comparing helps to note the details. The books gives the bigger picture, while the movie zooms in to sensationalize Hollywood’s ideal narrative. The movie also attempts to explain some of the inconsistencies in her life’s accounts from the book. 😒This autobiography is often criticized for its inconsistent timeline but it is from the woman who lived it, so what’s more important: the way a person sees the world and thus explains their actions or the logic of historical events?
⠀
There is so much more I want to say but I don't want to ruin the book for you. My DM is open. I am about to watch The United States vs. Billie Holiday. Thoughts to come.

Kat

📚 Black Buck
by Mateo Askaripour
⠀
So much to say.
So hard to explain it.
⠀
It mixes humor with the cold hard truth.
It’s extreme and yet, downright relatable.
⠀
It can be polarizing if this is now how you view the world, but there are so many layers to be analyzed and discussed amongst friends. Key word: friends. Get ready for that fun talk about race! 😏
⠀
This book delivers fully fleshed out characters in an unforgettable story.
⠀
It is a long story with a lot happening but a very entertaining ride. I’m secretly hoping it’s a standalone novel, so my imagination can continue to orbit around all of the “what if’s”.
⠀

📚 Dance Your Dance: 8 Steps to Unleash Your Passion and Live Your Dream by Laurieann Gibson
⠀
First off this legend pirouetted in and out of my line of sight for years. I have unknowingly loved Laurieann Gibson my entire life as she worked behind the scenes influencing the works of some of my favorite entertainers. And okay yeah, she drops a name or two in this book, but if you don't already know her resume, you'll just have read this to find out. Love her or hate her, everyone who has listened to her counsel came out better regardless of the current state of their relationship or manner of parting ways.
⠀
Here she has written a self-help guide to help us everyday folk get our ambitions off the treadmill and going places. I adored how this book showed a different side, contrary to her reality television persona- which can be intimidating and, let's be honest, a little bit scary. I loved that this book offered words of encouragement, reminders of faith and lingo to live by along with glimpses into the drama, blows, and triumphs that got her where she is today.
⠀
There are gems of good advice here, but I feel there is still so much more to learn that she may be keeping in her hip pocket. Perhaps she‘ll share in a follow-up. 🤞🏾 Call me noisy but I hoped this book would be more memoir and I really wanted to learn about her romantic life and more of life outside the dance studio.
⠀
All and all, this is a feel-good self-help book encouraging your true potential, drawing it out and wearing it like a badge of honor until the world recognize. It is short and to the point with no filler pages of repetitive rambling, which is refreshing. This book could be classified as Christian nonfiction because the author mentions faith and scripture, but it's not too much that would lose a reader of a contrary religion or belief system.
⠀
This is worth the read to anyone needing a push and raw honesty from one of hardest working people in the game.
⠀
💋 xoxo,
Kat

It's ✨Day 18✨ of the #BlackGirlBookstaTour cr It's ✨Day 18✨ of the #BlackGirlBookstaTour created and hosted by @spinesvines 😃 I wanted to feature my bookish thoughts and admiration on my most anticipated 2021 release!
⠀
📚Happily Ever Afters by Elise Bryant tells the story of Tessa, a hopeless romantic and writer often writing her image into dreamy love stories. When she is accepted into a prestigious art school for writing she loses her mojo and propelled by her bff embarks on a scheme to get it back.
⠀
✨I picked this novel as my first buddy read of the year wishing for bubble gum but getting juicy fruit where the sweetness is fleeting, the bubbles are never quite as big and yet the chew goes on. I'm saying I thought I wanted animation but got the realness I really needed. The protagonist was more real than flawless and that's what makes her loveable. Her impossible predicament keeps you reaching for that silver lining while resolving to the reality of it all. There were awkward situations and romance. Of course there was romance. Some tropes seem familiar, as there is nothing new under the sun, but the responses were eye-raising. This novel delivered disability representation as well as the biracial parenting where you sort of sympathize as much as you eye roll. The commentary was the best kind of corny with dad jokes and puns to make it light enough to take the sting out of life. This title forced me to face the cold hard truth that below the surface of ambition is often selfishness, so it's best to check yourself... often.
⠀
✨I'm grateful for that upcoming sequel because this debut novel exhibits a lot of potential for continuation and even a spinoff or two from the stories within the story and I am here for all this author has to offer!
⠀
✨You can expect to see me clutching this Black Joy bookshelf essential at a high tea party with the socialite Queen because it is definitely Designer Wear. And I do love trauma-free luxury!

📚 The Rib King by Ladee Hubbard
⠀
✨Imagine slowly peeling onions with the surface level being strength beneath so many layers of raw emotions of the struggle in Black America. You cleave to the resilience of hypothetically scared backs when the whip is no longer the weapon of choice but democracy, civil rights, and downright loss of dignity is the source of infliction. I am ever hopeful of rainbows, but I won't speak of that right now. This historical fiction is a reminder that racism, class privilege, and exploitation is but an old wound still festering. I could not look away and so I continued ever holding my breath as I read.
⠀
✨This psychological slow-burn thriller told in two parts from his (a groundskeeper)and then her (a maid’s) perspectives will leave your blood boiling to the surface with heart palpitations of the emotions of revenge brewing. Never have I ever felt so conflicted and yet so very much alive.
⠀
✨Warning: You may leave this book with dark emotions.
⠀
👠 This novel teetered the line between streetwear and fast fashion for me, but is definitely worth the impulse buy if historical fiction about injustice is your style.

📚 Today I’m excited to participate in the Bookstagram & Creative Tour for One Carefree Day by @whitneyamazeen! In this YA Contemporary Romance with #OwnVoices OCD rep, Willow Bates must manage her obsessive-compulsive disorder before she loses her home. What she doesn’t expect? Finding love in the process. One Carefree Day releases on February 7th, 2021 from Swan Pages Publishing!
⠀
✨ One Carefree Day has taught me that life is full of drama and you do not get a break because you have a condition. I also learned not to judge a book by its title, because this paperback was a rottweiler named Pookie. There were plot twists upon plot twists like you would not believe. Insert all the trigger warnings like abuse, suicide, and race. This entertaining well composed novel with Black and mental health representation held my attention until the end. The writing endeared me to the protagonist’s struggles as she navigated cosmetology school, love, friendship, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety, family, and life. It challenged my perception of a mother’s love 🤨 and kept me hoping for the best.

🗣A conversation about language. ⠀ Are you mon 🗣A conversation about language.
⠀
Are you mono, bi, or multi linguistic?
⠀
✨I am a novice speaker of eight tongues, and English is certainly not the easiest. There is absolutely nothing exotic about this statement because speaking only one language is abnormal on a global scale. There are 6,500 languages within the world, and that’s only the ones captured on census. I was recently researching speech technology, such as the ones found in Alexa, Hey Google, Siri, and many translation applications. It frustrates me to no end to read that English is the default language! Because English is the language of business, right? Are you freaking serious?!? This implies that even a language with a rich inflection system, no gender agreement at the level of verbs, and flexible syntax leading to scrambling could be phased out of the equation. If the syntax of the language exhibits a typical Subject-Object-Verb word order but has increased scrambling it can create problems in automatic linguistic analysis. So basically if the language cannot fit into a pattern recognizable by the English set computer it is deemed un-programmable. We talking killing languages because the lost in translation factor doesn’t accommodate English!
⠀
✨This post serves as a service announcement to learn another language, and not just one within the same language family of Indo-European. Expand your horizons to Niger-Congo, Austronesian, Trans-New Guinea, Sino-Tibetan, and Afro-Asiatic.
⠀
⠀
✨Speech technology affects global communication by cultivating multilingual speakers, and bridging language barriers within the cultural divide allowing for uniformity among dialects within semantics. But it is hindered in its full potential with propelling the phenomenon of linguistic globalization while leading to the extinction of other languages and cultures when monolingual speakers are the overwhelming majority in a single country. Yes, I’m talking to you America!
⠀
💋 xoxo,
Kat
⠀
P.S. This is not a chastisement, but encouragement to my fellow readers that in your entertainment reading, learn something new. Why not another language? It truly would make the world a better place.

📚 The Beautiful Struggle (Adapted for Young Adults) by Ta-Nehisi Coates
⠀
Synopsis: Adapted from the adult memoir by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Water Dancer and Between the World and Me, this father-son story explores how boys become men, and quite specifically, how Ta-Nehisi Coates became Ta-Nehisi Coates.
⠀
As a child, Ta-Nehisi Coates was seen by his father, Paul, as too sensitive and lacking focus. Paul Coates was a Vietnam vet who’d been part of the Black Panthers and was dedicated to reading and publishing the history of African civilization. When it came to his sons, he was committed to raising proud Black men equipped to deal with a racist society, during a turbulent period in the collapsing city of Baltimore where they lived.
⠀
Coates details with candor the challenges of dealing with his tough-love father, the influence of his mother, and the dynamics of his extended family, including his brother “Big Bill,” who was on a very different path than Ta-Nehisi. Coates also tells of his family struggles at school and with girls, making this a timely story to which many readers will relate.
