#ReadInterfaith ✨ Day 2
Today’s theme is “LGBTQ+”✨ 💬 ”…we need the best of our food culture as African people in America to move forward to give us opportunity in areas where there is blight, to bring alternatives to a wilderness of food deserts and plagues of chronic illness and nutritional deficiency. A heritage that is only selfcongratulating and masturbatory is not a heritage at all but rather insipid nostalgia.” Here is your #blackjewishbookchallenge pick continued: 📚 The Cooking Gene: A Journey Through African American Culinary History in the Old South
by Michael W. Twitty 📚 Bookish Thoughts 💭 Appetite Stimulant • Uniquely Original • Identity Affirming Abridged Synopsis (via @Goodreads): “A renowned culinary historian offers a fresh perspective on our most divisive cultural issue, race, in this illuminating memoir of Southern cuisine and food culture that traces his ancestry—both black and white—through food, from Africa to America and slavery to freedom. ❤️ This author is immensely knowledgeable about the history of food and makes brilliant connections between what we put on our plates and heritage. I was beyond fascinated by the concepts presented while quelling a growling stomach from the vivid almost tangible descriptions of cuisine. Bearing witness to his personal journey was awe-inspiring. I felt a kinship with the parallels made between Southern roots, Blackness, and Jewishness. I am desperately awaiting a Kosher soul food cookbook from this author. I just know it will be epic ! 💔 While the author identifies as gay, Black, and Jewish, he shares very little on romantic relationships or his life outside of the kitchen. I understand this book’s intent, so that’s not a major complaint…only a fact of note. ✨ Recommendations: Everyone #readoutsideyourbubble ❔If you’ve ever taken a genealogy test, have you also gone in search of the long lost relatives whom share your blood? 💋 xoxo,
