📚 Bookish Thoughts 💭
⠀
Engrossing • Conversational • Thought Provoking
⠀
💬 “When Black people let DNA tests take precedence over their family stories, as I did, they reinforce narrow, racist misconceptions about blood purity and authenticity.”
⠀
“People’s assumptions are not only wrong, but dangerous too. When people assume, they inadvertently erase others’ identities.”
⠀
“Reconsideration is what history is all about; history doesn’t care what you feel. I had to be OK with being uncomfortable with whatever I would find out about my family.”
⠀
📚 Wandering in Strange Lands: A Daughter of the Great Migration Reclaims Her Roots by Morgan Jerkins
⠀
❓Have your family ever said you had Cherokee in your lineage?
⠀
💡 Mine too. Sadly, DNA tests say otherwise. This book has definitely given me the encouragement to dig a little deeper.
⠀
❤️ This was my first book by this author as well as peek in the topic of tracing roots. This was definitely a smooth flowing book. It was very consuming and read like a thriller. I was holding my breath in anticipation of discovering where this journey would go next. I was completely invested in seeing the end and could not focus on anything else.
⠀
💔 The ending was sweet but still not completely satisfying and there were a few dead ends. There is definitely room to continue expansion on this research.
⠀
✨ Recommendations: Everyone, but especially fans of the author.
